About Us
Welcome! I am very pleased to welcome you to the website of Wistow Academy. I hope you will find everything you are looking for and that it serves as a good introduction to life at our school.
It is my great pleasure and privilege to have started as Headteacher. I know already that this is a wonderful school that aims to provide all students with the very best start in life by providing them with an outstanding secondary education. This will go on being achieved by ensuring each child in our care reaches their full potential academically and, in addition, develops a broad set of skills that enables them to be successful in our ever-changing world.
These aims are delivered through a commitment to providing: the highest quality learning experiences, a strong pastoral system and an extensive range of sporting, cultural and extra-curricular activities.
Our school motto: emphasises the importance of partnership in our success. We will continue to ensure that parents are kept fully informed of our students’ progress and achievement in order to facilitate that crucial partnership.

Promoting Fundamental British Values
In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.
The Key Values are:
- Democracy
- Rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
At Wistow Academy School these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:
Democracy
Each year the children nominate class members to represent their views at school council. We hold formal elections and the children present their reasons to be elected. Our school council which meets regularly to discuss issues raised from classes. The council is genuinely able to effect change within the school.
The Rule of Law
The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced at Wistow Academy. Pupils are taught from an early age the rules of the school: to be READY, RESPECTFUL and SAFE. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind rules and laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message.
Individual Liberty
At Wistow Academy, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our online safety and PSHE lessons.
Mutual Respect
Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect. This is echoed in our "Rights Respecting" work with UNICEF.
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Wistow Academy is a diverse school. We actively promote diversity through our celebrations of different faiths and cultures. Religious Education lessons and PSHE lessons reinforce messages of tolerance and respect for others. Members of different faiths and religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. The children visit places of worship that are important to different faiths.
